The Black Economy and ATO Focus Areas

Theatre 6
Business & Finance Conference

The Black Economy is where businesses deliberately hide income to avoid paying the right amount of tax and/or superannuation. The black economy taskforce (established by the federal government in December 2016), estimates the value of the black economy to be as large as 3% of our GDP or around $50 billion dollars. In tackling the black economy, the ATO wants to protect honest businesses and focus on those that deliberately try to do the wrong thing.

Key takeaways:

  • Understand what the black economy is and why it is important that this problem is addressed
  • Find out what the ATO will be focusing on
  • Learn what your business can do
